If you are new to surf fishing then we have some good surfcasting tips in this article. We'll go over some of the different techniques to use on your first time out and where exactly to go to find the biggest fish or the best places. Surfcasting can be a very rewarding hobby, but it does take some practice and dedication to get some of the more advanced techniques down. You will be sure to have a lot of fun though no matter what skill level you obtain.
It's best to get your first surfcasting rods at a garage sale. Surfcasting rods can become quite expensive so if you're not sure if this is the right hobby for you, there is no need to go out and drop a couple hundred on a brand-new one. Surfcasting rods range from 10 to 12 feet long and that's because they need to be in order to build up enough force to cast a heavy sinker more than 150 feet. Your rod should also be able to dismantle itself for easy traveling.
You should buy a reel for each rod that you own. Most surf casters use the large spinning reels for their ease of use, but don't think that you can't use a bait casting reel if you are more accustomed to something like that.
When you are buying your line you want to buy monofilament or a type of braided line that can withstand about 18 to 45 pounds worth of weight. You don't want to get a line that is too light because fish can easily cut it and get away, but don't get one that is too heavy or it will affect your cast. Now you can see with all of these different items why you don't want to get a brand-new rod right out of the stable.
The right hooks to buy range from #4 to 2/0, depending on what kind of fish you are going after. Smaller fish like flounders can be caught with #4 to #2 hooks while if you're going for the bigger ones you will want to stay with #2 to 1/0.
When you are finally ready to go out and bag the big one, you'll want to find a more secluded beach or shoreline to do your fishing. It's great to go down to the pier or beach with the other hundred fishermen to have a great time and socialize, but if you really want to get that sucker then you'll have to go to a more secluded place. Fish have the tendency to learn which places to avoid and fishing piers tend to be one of them. Although you can catch fish with a couple hundred other fishermen, you won't have as high of a success rate by not picking a remote beach.
I hope these good surfcasting tips helped you out and if you have any more questions, there are plenty of videos on YouTube that will give you more in depth tutorials.
